This article is based on a true experience that took place with my web host. I am not here to blame or try to give my web host a bad name, I am here to give an honest web host review that makes sense to you before choosing a web host provider that is right for your business.

All web hosts are created equal in my eyes, that is, or that used to be, until I got shut down without warning. It was very hard for me to understand how I could start a new website from scratch and eat up 40 Gigs of bandwidth in that short span of time (3 months, and I was shut down).

You should do a web host review, before you make a choice. The problem online today is, how you can make a sound web host review with all the thousands out there.

It is impossible to review the thousands of web host out there, but it is in your best interest if you base your web host review on high in demand providers. Many of the top marketers have their own server, and you can't afford to pay $200 or more monthly for your own server.

They make you pay extra for unlimited domain names, but you being new to the Internet, you won't ever need more than three to six domain names to get you started.

2) Don't go with any web hosting provider that requires the full amount up front.

They offer low cost web hosting if you pay the yearly price up front. Well, once you have paid for the year, you are tied to this company, should their service be not worthy, and you will lose your initial yearly payment. Go with a company that has a 3 month or monthly payment plan, with a money back guarantee.

3) Test by sending a simple email to your web host first.

Just send off a simple email telling your web host that you’re interested in their hosting, this is a must for you to review web host that are unknown. The response time to your email will let you know what type of service they offer.

4) Ask for a charge back.

As you know, the client is supposed to be king, keep all your receipts in place, and should you ever be shut down by your web host after paying a yearly plan, just go to your credit card provider and file a complaint for a refund. Don't let anyone scam you out of your money.

Adobe Photoshop and other graphics suite can be used to create, manipulate and convert images to suitable formats. Once a host is found, it is pretty easy to upload the files and look at your wonder child with wonder.

There are those that also give your new website some free promotion. These benefits are basically fine for beginners when creating websites for free.

If you use Lycos free web hosting you will get your new website indexed within a couple of days – believe it or not. That is because they heavily use Google Ads that surrounds your website and that is based on your content. This is how the free web hosting companies make their money from you – through Pay Per Click advertising.

Of course, where your website is ranked/positioned will depend on your competition and on the nature and quality of you website content.

Lycos free web hosting is however, very easy to use – especially for a beginner.

To be fair, I started off by using them myself and learned a helluva lot - I even made some money selling stuff but there are some serious disadvantages...

Some of The Downsides:

As I have stated, I started out by using them myself but one of the major problems that I had with them (one in particular - Lycos) was the amount of downtime, which was normally due to maintenance – and it nearly always seemed to be at the beginning of the weekend; that’s when people find time to surf the net – what a bummer that was. The thing is you can’t complain because it’s all down to larkins. (Free) Which makes it really worth as much as you pay for it?

If you get a problem and need to contact them – well forget about it. I tried endlessly and all to no avail on many occasions. They never bothered to reply to my emails. (They do provide a half decent paid hosting service, as I have used them a few years back. They’re not great, but they’re okay.)

Some years ago (when I was using Lycos Free web hosting) I had a website owner who completely plagiarised by website (literally word for word) as I’d taken the number one spot on Google, and so I threatened to take action against him. He had a dot com website and instead, contacted my free web host and told them a bunch of out and out lies to which they blocked my website immediately.

They did not even give me a single chance to reply to their email as it would be returned "fatal error – mailer daemon".

I do understand Lycos’ position on this, as they don’t want anyone using their free web hosting service for anything unethical and don’t want to get their name mixed up with it. But that doesn’t help you or me if we are in the right and are in a right old fix.

I later contacted Google, Yahoo, MSN, ClickBank and Nochex (under the DMCA –Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and sent them all my documentation and affidavits and they totally killed him off the net – even to today.

If I’d had a paid host I would have been able to explain the situation and have it dealt with in a proper fashion, but unfortunately with Lycos, I didn’t have a leg to stand on as it was free hosting; they just cut my site off.

Another thing is that some free web hosts like Lycos, use very intrusive pop-up adverts, which is very annoying to visitors and an absolute killer for any site - especially a business website.

I’m not kidding; some of their adverts can completely cover your entire web page! This leaves the visitor to click on the ‘back-button’ and end up giving your website a complete miss – and rightly so.

Let’s face it; what right-minded customer will take your business seriously if they think that you cannot even afford to pay for your own web hosting?

You will also be limited to how and what you name your website and it is likely to be a very log-winded URL as well, such as: http://www.members.freehost.co.uk/yourdomainname (who’s gonna remember that?)

Conclusion:,You may wish to use Tripod.com (as they have free web hosting as well) and they have some decent web templates too. They are however, quite difficult to edit and amend for someone who is new to website building. Their finished websites do have a professional ‘look and feel’ to them though.

Tripod.com also use Google ads, but are much better positioned (at the top and bottom of your new website) and they aren’t obtrusive and do not overlap your website content as does those at Lycos.

3D animation basically consists of generating depth in 2D objects by various means. Lighting and shading is a powerful way to provide depth to objects and characters. At first the model of the object is created using a number of polygons. The density of polygons or the number of polygons for a given area defines the smoothness of an object. In applications like 3D video games where real time response is more important than faithful reproduction, the polygon density is obviously less. In applications such as a animated movie, realism of scenes take primary importance. The complexity of the objects requires a high polygon density.

Once the objects have been modeled, they have to be imparted motion or they have to be animated. Finally the animated objects which are essentially 3D in nature have to be converted to 2D. This process is called rendering. More the polygon density, more time it takes to render an object. It is often required to combine video and 3D images. This process is called compositing. Rendering process is one of the most important in generating a 3D image. A small bit of a movie lasting just a few seconds can take days to be rendered. Render farms and piping are phrases associated with 3D animation. Mental Ray is a renderer provided as a part of Softimage and Maya 3D packages. It is also gaining in popularity among other 3D developers. Renderman is a renderer used by Pixar and some large film production companies, for development of feature films.

A number of operations are involved in creating 3D animations. The three most popular software commercially available for 3D modeling , lighting and shading are Maya, 3ds Max and Softimage .Each of the software has its strength and tools to address various requirements of 3D design and development .

No matter how you put it pictures are you weapon of choice and they should be the part of your website that makes you stand out from the rest. The problem is this, having great pictures or graphics is not enough, you have to present them well. Without the proper organisation and presentational choice all your hard work will look out of place and insignificant.

Background Imagery

The deployment of background imagery can literally make or break a website in the first few seconds of a viewing. As you may expect gaudy or very heavy backgrounds make other points of the site difficult to read or focus on. I recommend you stick to fresh light colours such as white, pastels or ice blues. If you want something to spice up open spaces apply a vague watermark or non-complex texture but don’t let it overpower the placement of navigation or the pages true content. A big mistake is to use a full coloured image with a box in front as this creates an inverse framing effect where the edges of the site appear more interesting than the centre and content. As with all graphic design elements you should make sure the contrast between the page elements and your background imagery are right before adding any complex graphics.

Logos and Headers

Logos and header are an important design element of your page but often for different reasons than people initially think. You want your logo to draw the eye but not to take the attention away from your page the whole time. For this reason I strongly advise you do not use animation unless you are working with an establish brand (Nike or BMI Baby for example). At the end of the day your logo is there to stick in peoples minds not get in their way, just remember that. Try to create something unique and catchy and it is often a good idea to have some strong contrast with your background in there. Gradients and curves can be a good tactic here if your page doesn’t use them elsewhere, if it does then use sharp edges and solid colours to stand out. Headers should be fairly simple and are usually designed to contrast with the logo and the page. I many designs this is done with shades of a colour instead of a completely different colour but 3 colour designs are still popular on the web and if used correctly can look great.

Product and Feature Imagery

The most important factor in the use of product imagery is how easy it is for a potential customer/user to see what they are looking for. You may think this statement is a little vague but it is only based on common sense. If you are building an ecommerce site that sells toy trains, the most predominant image on the homepage should be something relating to toy trains or you risk the (very high) chance of a user just clicking off. You should also relate everything else to your product imagery so that it appears integrated, remember your product is unlikely to be as easy to change in appearance as your template so build it to suit first and change it as you need to instead of having a theme that looks metallic and smooth and selling blockly wooden toy trains. You may also wish to use contrast or other design techniques to draw attention to your product or feature image, this is often done with "frame" style effect. This is very successful on product sites as customers are trained to look for these image frames with their potential purchase inside.
